Huzzah! The dogs accompanied us for their first official vacation. We're very proud of them for doing so well in the car for 10 hours each way.

Poor Moxie and Tobique.

On Friday, February 23, we abandonned them at the vet clinic. We left them there for 7 hours, to have their teeth cleaned. Moxie, thanks to her terriertude, will not let anyone look at her teeth. As a precaution, we have her teeth scaled every few years. This year, sadly, our vet found a decayed tooth. Moxie is now minus one molar.

Tobique, the dear, lets us look at his teeth. Apparently cat poop is not good for the gums.

Poo Shui

My theory of Poo Shui (for Feng Shui) -- dogs have to find the perfect spot that has all of the correct kharmic alignments on which to have a satisfying poo. Dogs are very spiritual creatures and the finickyness for the right spot is evidence of their devotion and faith. At least, this is what I tell myself in -40 weather when Moxie and Tobique take their time!

the difference a dog makes

I lived in Ottawa for 9 years before I got a dog. I have always loved dogs - and I knew that sometime, when the stars were perfectly aligned, I would have a dog of my very own. And Moxie became the dog of my adult years.

We took a taxi home, Moxie and I. I forced her to sit on my lap: the taxi-guy didn't like her. She squirmed, she whined, as the place she called home for 7 months receded behind us. The reality of my decision struck me then: we both had entered the realm of the point of no return. She continued to whimper during the entire trip from suburbia. I rubbed her ears in an effort to calm her.

She appeared to be sad for the first few days, but Moxie's terriertude ruled the day. Excited to explore downtown, with all of its people and traffic, and eager to meet all of the neighbourhood dogs, she settled into our little routine. I fell in love (as did Nik). Who can resist the brachicephalic face and those popping-toad-like eyes? We all fell in love.

10 Things I Learned about Life from Having a Dog

Patience. When a cute little black dog eats cat poo as a snack while lying on the bed; or chews your shoes; or pees on your friends' bed, you learn patience. No creature is perfect: it takes time to guide and to teach.
Kindness is better than rage. Teaching a dog how to be good involves positive reinforcement, patience and lots of cookies.
Don't cry over chewed shoes. Once they're chewed, they're gone. Move on.
Sleep when you're tired, eat when you're hungry, and always be up for play.
Messes happen. Carry lots of plastic bags.
Good health care is important. Never being responsible for my own health, I realized that my dog got the best of food, the best of exercise, and the best of health care that I could afford. I deserve the same.
Everybody needs a treat now and then. It keeps life pleasant.
Don't be a social snob. It's good to interact with people from all walks of life: be it the silver Olympic medalist's purebred dog or the homeless guy's smelly mixed breed - all are fun to hump!
Confidence = Sexiness
Don't be afraid to demand what you want. From tummy rubs to the pizza crust, if you don't make demands, you'll never get anything.

Two cool city dogs who have lots of fun, are a bit spoiled, get into trouble, and get too many cookies. It's about time they get their own blog.

So far this blog works well in Safari and Firefox - it does not work at all in Internet Explorer. Sorry about that - I'll attempt to fix that up soonish.
